While he was gone, his brother, Frederick Duesenberg, took over the daily operations of the company. In 1919 Duesenberg Automobiles was founded. It acquired Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1921 for $150,000 and set about building racing cars and engines at the facility that would win its first major American race in 1922. The following year they made their own racing car and engine but were disqualified before the start of the race for being too heavy. They won anyway as all the other cars broke.
